“You made my first chandelier project very do-able Thank you”

I know in the past that I have shared customers restoration projects with you, with their consent of course, but I wanted to share the comments received in an email earlier this week just in case you had been toying with the idea of restoring a chandelier, wall lights, crystal shade etc but had been put off because you did not know where to start.

If you are reading this blog then you have started your journey as you are googling chandelier companies, chandelier repair, chandelier parts etc, don’t be hesitant in taking the next step as it is not as daunting as you may think (or as expensive) and we are here to help.

The comments in the email read “Thank you once again for your help, you have made my first chandelier project very do-able and I hope the finished product does all your work justice.”

So you may be wondering what help we gave, the help that was extended is help we offer all our customers, from private individuals to trade customers – traditional customer service, providing the type of support that we like extended to ourselves. The opportunity to speak to a human and not AI and to interact with the same individual each time so that you do not need to keep recapping the issue to gain a resolution.

After we were contacted via email enquiring about availability of some crystal buttons and beads he had identified he needed from our website but in alternative sizes to those shown, we were able to interact with him via telephone and email. After a check of our stock, we have a large amount that has not yet found it’s way on to our website, we were able to confirm availability of some of sizes and suggestions on substitutions where sizes of buttons slightly differed to his original pieces. This enabled him to purchase the parts he needed, on this occasion this is extra special as the chandeliers have sentimental meaning to him.

This is support we offer our customers every day and it varies daily on the form of assistance required. From National Trust curators confirming suitability on chain and candle tubes, customers at the very beginning of their chandelier journey as described above to enquiries regarding delivery lead times, bespoke candle tubes and thread sizes. We are here to support you with your project and would much prefer for you to reach out to us if you have a query rather than for you to decide not to proceed because it is too daunting/expensive or that your query is “silly” – your question may be a question we have been asked previously and makes us realise that we need to address the query in a blog for others!

If you don’t want to reach out to us personally start off with a visit to our website which includes a “How To Video Tutorial Page”, https://www.kingschandeliers.co.uk/video-tutorials.html a range of blogs covering topics such as “What is a Bobeche”, “Different methods of chandelier pinning”, “Chandelier drop names” and much more. We are also updating our website to include more information and assistance on our product listings but this takes time so please if you cannot find the answer to your question in our videos or blogs or you cannot see the chandelier part you need contact us via email info@kingschandeliers.co.uk or call us on 01206332938.

Female Or Male Thread

One of the questions that we are asked is what is the difference between a female thread and a male thread and which do I need.

A female thread is on the inside and receives the item, the male thread is external and so visible to the eye and enters the item. We have prepared a simple reference sheet showing some examples of lighting components with both thread types, all of which are available from our website.

Please telephone, 01206332938, or email info@kingschandeliers.co.uk if you have any questions

Different Methods Of Chandelier Pinning

There are different methods of re-pinning your chandelier crystals allowing you the choice to suit your chandelier and your personal preferences.

Chandelier Pinning Options By Kings Chandelier Services Ltd

Chandelier Pins -This is the traditional method of chandelier pinning (along with chandelier wire). The pins have a pin head and come in a choice of finishes and lengths – if you are new to chandelier pinning we recommend that you start with the longer pins and as you become more comfortable with the process you can, if you wish, reduce the length of the pin you start with. Having a longer pin allows you to be able to trim any excess you do not need.

Pinning pliers can be purchased from our website (click here) and we have a “How To” Video on our website on our Video Tutorial Page

Chandelier Bow Tie Clips – These are a simple pinning method, often used on more modern chandeliers but equally acceptable on vintage chandeliers. You insert one “leg” through the hole on your crystal, fold the leg over to the centre (legs to the back of the crystal), insert the other leg through your second crystal and fold over to meet the other leg in the centre thus the decorative front is the piece that will be on show. As well as being popular for repinning chandeliers they are very popular for joining crystals on suncatchers.

Chandelier Connecting Rings – These are again popular for the modern chandeliers and are a simple way of joining chandelier crystals and suncatcher crystals. Open the ring and feed it through the crystal, you may want to find it easier to use our pinning pliers when using the rings to hold the ring open whilst you insert through the crystal to stop the ring closing prematurely.

Chandelier Pinning Wire – A traditional chandelier crystal pinning method whereby you need to create a “pin head” to stop the wire going straight through the crystal. The wire can be cut to the lengths that you require as you go along. The chandelier wire is also used when the design requires the chandelier beads to be strung and for tying in place glass ribs to metal chandelier arms.

Chandelier Drop Names – Part Three

What Are My Chandelier Drops Called – Part 3 – we have taken a little break from our blogs, not intentionally just busy with new stock coming in and preparing customers orders and restoration projects.

As crystal Albert drops have been very popular in the last weeks I thought this blog could feature cut and plain full and half Alberts.

We recognise that with more people shopping online and less physical shops to personally choose your chandelier drops it can be frustrating, and following a request from one of our interior designer customers we have started putting together some product name identifiers so show some of the names we use on our website with photo examples.

We have many more pieces on our website and in our workshops so please contact us for further details or forward photos of the pieces you are looking to match to – our stocks are genuine vintage and antique pieces not reproduction.

Chandelier Drop Names – Part Two

What Are My Chandelier Drops Called – Part 2 – it can be quite daunting when searching the internet for replacement chandelier drops and pendants as you may not be familiar with the terminology and companies may refer to pieces by a variation of names. This can be due to a variety of reasons, there are a lot of variations of similar style drops and pendants, some companies may use original French and Italian names but with different spellings and of course when advertising the search engines do not like websites to duplicate their product names excessively.

We recognise that with more people shopping online and less physical shops to personally choose your chandelier drops it can be frustrating, and following a request from one of our interior designer customers we have started putting together some product name identifiers so show some of the names we use on our website with photo examples.

Slab drops are a common chandelier drop and there are many varieties, below is just a small example, and due to the popularity of this style the word “slab” is usually incorporated in the product title and/or description. Examples of product names from our own website include French Slab Drop, Slab Pendant, Bell Drop, Flat Back Slab Drop to name just a few. We have many more pieces on our website and in our workshops so please contact us for further details or forward photos of the pieces you are looking to match to – our stocks are genuine vintage and antique pieces not reproduction.

Chandelier Refurbishment

With the passing of the Christmas season you may be looking at your chandelier and thinking it is looking a little tired and sorry for it’s self.  Refurbishing your chandelier does not need to be expensive as it is not a full restoration, just a little TLC.

If you didn’t get a chance to clean your chandelier in the lead up to the festive season this can instantly transform the chandelier.  It also gives you a chance to check over the chandelier to make sure that all the crystals are in place and undamaged; you will also be able to see any that need re-pinning.

Replacing the odd crystal does not need to be expensive, we do not have a minimum order value on our website and our chandelier pins are available in small cost effective packs as well as larger quantities for a full chandelier restoration.  Dependant on the chandelier crystals and buttons that you are looking for you will find in both our antique  and modern chandelier parts that some are available in pack sizes as well as singles.

Whilst cleaning your chandelier you can check to see if any of the candle tubes need replacing or you may wish to change the style and colour of your candle tubes to revitalise the look of your chandelier – again you do not need to place a minimum order our candle tubes are available in singles as well.

Of course when cleaning your chandelier check your bulbs are all working correctly.

REMEMBER when cleaning your chandelier ensure the electrical supply is switched off, do not expose the electrics to liquids and move yourself and your ladder around the chandelier do not turn the chandelier to you – you may unscrew the fixings.

Points to remember when buying a chandelier

This blog has been prompted by a lovely lady that I spoke to several times last week who is currently refurbishing business premises and had purchased several chandeliers and lanterns (not from King’s Chandelier Services Ltd as she did not find us until after her chandeliers were delivered and she realised she had a problem!).  Whilst speaking to her we realised that the problem she was facing was a far more common issue than she or other clients realised and we were able to reassure her that she was not the only person to face these challenges when purchasing chandeliers.

When chandeliers are purchased from ourselves we will ensure that the client has chain that is sufficient to carry the weight of the chandelier together with a ceiling rose ceiling plate hook that is the correct weight loading capacity for the combined weight.  If we are not installing the chandelier we will discuss with the client or their chandelier installer the components they require to ensure that they have everything required to install their chandelier, however not all chandelier suppliers offer this service and if you purchase from a private source it may only be the chandelier itself that is sold, not the chain and fixings.

We have found, as in the case of our client last week, not everyone is aware of what is required for the installation of a chandelier and so we thought a blog offering some guidance may be useful to potential (and existing) chandeliers owners.

When you decide that you wish to purchase a chandelier, lantern etc for your property there are the standard things you need to consider as you would for any lighting: is it suitable for the room and the rooms purpose, ensuring you purchase the right style and size – remember you also need to consider the depth of the chandelier and how low you wish this to hang in the room, if you have high ceilings you may want to have the chandelier hanging lower than in a standard room and if your property has low ceilings you need to take this into consideration as well.

Once you have chosen the style and size chandelier and make your final selection this is when you need to think about how you are installing the chandelier and what components you need.

The first thing you need to find out is the weight of your chandelier, a light weight chandelier is relatively easy to install but heavier chandeliers need more consideration.  Are you going to install the chandelier yourself or have it professionally installed?

If you are using a professional company to install your chandelier you will need to discuss the components that you require and whether they are going to supply these for you or if you need to source these yourself.

Questions to ask yourself:-

  • Does your chandelier come with existing chain?  If yes is it the correct length for your requirements? chandelier chain
  • If you chandelier does  not come with chain or if you wish to extend the chain you need to know the weight of the chandelier.  To work out which chandelier chain to purchase you need to remember that the chain needs to take its own weight as well as that of the chandelier so please if the chandelier weighs 19 kgs do not purchase a chain that has a maximum weight loading of 20kg go for a chandelier chain that takes somewhat more – better to be safe than sorry.
  • Please note when choosing chandelier chain from King’s Chandelier Services Ltd we are concerned with the weight loading capability rather than how pretty it looks! chandelier chains
  • Does your chandelier come with a ceiling rose and chandelier fixing hook? If yes remember to weight load test before you suspend your chandelier.  If no again you need to know the weight before ordering, our chandelier ceiling roses and ceiling plate hooks detail their weight loading capabilities, if your chandelier is heavier than those please read our blog Frequently asked questions – installing my chandelier
  • Does your chandelier come with a fixing hook or loop on the actual chandelier, if not you will need to determine the thread size of the threaded rod running through the centre of the chandelier.  Dependant on the weight of the chandelier as to which components you would need to use for us to assist in choosing a part from our website we would recommend emailing us photos and details of weight etc to info@kingschandeliers.co.uk
  • Finally one other item to consider, that is often over looked, does your chandelier need additional electrical cable.  Many chandeliers are sold with minimal electrical cable and if you are having a considerable drop from the ceiling to the chandelier you may need to extend the electrical cable.  We have a wide selection of 3 core and 2 core electrical cables suitable for chandeliers, lanterns and lights braided electrical cables

One final tip for this blog, as I get asked this regularly – how do I weigh my chandelier – if you can lift the chandelier weigh yourself and then weigh yourself holding the chandelier and take one away from the other and this will give you an estimated weight of your chandelier (dependant on how accurate your scales are); then add a bit onto the weight to allow for inaccuracies due to using domestic scales.  If you cannot lift the chandelier we would assume you are using a professional chandelier installation company and they will have the equipment needed to weigh this on your behalf.

We hope you found this blog of interest and if you have any suggestions for future blogs please email us at contact us
